Org. Setting and Reporting

This position is located in the Non-Governmental Organizations (NGO) Branch, Office for Intergovernmental Support and Coordination for Sustainable Development (OISC)in the Department of Economic and Social Affairs (DESA). OISC, under DESA, provides substantive support to the work of the United Nations General Assembly, the Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC) and the High-level Political Forum (HLPF) on Sustainable Development. Responsibilities

Within delegated authority, the Research Assistant will be responsible for the following duties: • Researches, extracts, and compiles basic information and technical data on specific programmes/projects and related topics and issues. • Reviews applications for consultative status with the Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC) including, applications for reclassifications submitted by NGOs, including all components of the application package and additional documentation presented through the Integrated Civil Society System (iCSO). • Researches, compiles and summarizes background materials for use in preparation of reports, briefs, speeches, etc. • Sort, consolidates, extracts and processes data and enter into relevant database. • Assists in monitoring developments/issues on subjects or areas assigned by collecting, selecting, analysing, and compiling materials from multiple sources, e.g., relevant databases, the library, and the Internet. • Assembles original statistical material; adjusts reported data form different sources and load data into computerized database system. • Assists in the evaluation and examination of data sets for accuracy, clarity, and validity. • Assists in the maintenance of relevant computerized databases and website. • Collects and analyzes relevant data and prepares and analyzes a variety of reports, presentations, tables, data sets and/or diagrams to facilitate in-depth analysis of the information and review by senior officers. • Prepares abstracts/bibliographic descriptions for inclusion in documents, articles, books, and publications. • Reviews stores, classifies, populates and/or maintains relevant computerized databases. • Takes notes and drafts executive summaries of meetings. • Collects organizes and disseminates relevant UN and media information. • Co-ordinates and sets up press briefings, press statements, pamphlets, or other public awareness campaigns to educate public on any specific issue. • Assists in providing guidance/training to NGO representatives on the process of applying for consultative status, and other activities aimed at facilitating their contribution to the work of ECOSOC. • Performs, under minimal supervision, the full range of office management and administrative support functions, including recruitment processes. • Ensures smooth and efficient information flow within the unit; prepares and processes confidential information; assists in the development of office administrative systems and procedures. • Performs other related work as required.

Work Experience

A minimum of five years of experience in collecting and researching data across various areas of social and economic development or related area is required. The minimum years of relevant experience is reduced to three years for candidates who possess a first-level university degree or higher.

Languages

English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. For the post advertised, fluency in oral and written English is required. Knowledge of another official United Nations language is an advantage.

Assessment

Evaluation of qualified candidates may include an assessment exercise which may be followed by competency-based interview.
