Synopsis
He was trained to follow orders. He became a hero by defying them.
Navy SEAL Lieutenant A.K. Waters and his elite squadron of tactical specialists are forced to choose between their duty and their humanity, between following orders by ignoring the conflict that surrounds them, or finding the courage to follow their conscience and protect a group of innocent refugees. When the democratic government of Nigeria collapses and the country is taken over by a ruthless military dictator, Waters, a fiercely loyal and hardened veteran is dispatched on a routine mission to retrieve a Doctors Without Borders physician.

Review by Christian Di Leo ★★½ 2
Bruce Willis and his squad of commandos (including Cole Hauser, Johnny Messner & Eamonn Walker) are sent on an extraction mission to retrieve a doctor from Nigeria after the country has been taken over by a ruthless military dictator. This one is a pretty mid-level entry in Antoine Fuqua's catalogue but there is definitely stuff to like here. Willis and his team are strapped to the teeth with weaponry and hardware, bella Monica Bellucci be looking good as always, the acting is solid and it has it's fair share of tension and brutality throughout. It's by no means a great action-thriller but it looks good and it's definitely engaging and watchable, even though the better of the action isn't showcased until the final 30 minutes. It's also nice going back in time and seeing when Willis used to actually give a shit when it came to his performances.

Review by Josh Lewis ★★ 6
I guess it means well and looks expensive at times but it can't decide whether it wants to be a generic, socially-conscious Hollywood drama or a reactionary action movie and instead splits the difference and is just bad at both. Fuqua the God of making even the exciting parts of his movies boring.

OK, so whereas Asterix and Obelisk mostly just used Monica's version of Cleopatra as eye candy, here in Tears of the Sun she delivers some solid drama as field Dr Lena Kendricks. A doctor working the tough life in an African war zone, and in need of rescue along with her team and the locals from the incoming hostile militants. In steps Bruce Willis as Navy SEAL Lieutenant Waters to clear up the mess, only it's not quite that straightforward. Then again, with Bruce it's never that straightforward.
A pretty ordinary action flick and stereotypically Willis, this is a mostly easy watch with a couple of harrowing moments.
+1 for Monica.
Always +1 for Monica. -
Review by matt lynch ★★½ 1
Reductively and cluelessly stumbles into every single trap you'd expect of a film about American military might separating "good" Africans from "bad" ones. If I'm being honest, though, my hardware fetish and general love of screen violence keep it relatively enjoyable.

Review by panos75 ★★★ 1
After a violent coup overthrows the government of Nigeria, a group of special forces soldiers evacuates any American citizens that have been left behind. Their last target is an Italian-American doctor who refuses to leave her hospital in the middle of the jungle without a handful of refugees who are hunted by violent militia.
While it doesn't stray far from the well-known formula of modern war films, "Tears of the Sun" has enough brutal violence and raises enough thought-provoking issues to distinguish itself from other examples of the same genre. The killings of innocent people aren't sanitized and when the villains get their comeuppances it isn't a moment of triumph but of somber realization about the wicked nature of this…

It’s watchable I suppose, but just once. The action sequences are mildly satisfying, but I have no aspirations of a rewatch.

I'd love to know exactly the moment that Bruce Willis' career path started to falter? He'd starred in classics like Die Hard, survived the likes of Look Who's Talking and Hudson Hawk, rebounded with The Last Boy Scout and Pulp Fiction, and plumbed the depths with Color of Night and The Fifth Element. He had a habit of emerging from a streak of awful movies with a stonker, but as a box office draw he wasn't the Willis of old. 2008 saw Willis' first direct-to-Dvd release, and since then he's been paddling in a sea of mediocre shit almost ever since. There's been the odd flourish here and there, Moonrise Kingdom, RED, and Glass probably being the highlights, but Willis'…

Cinematic Time Capsule2003 Marathon - Film #49
”I don’t know if it was a good thing or not”
Antoine Fuqua’s followup to TRAINING DAY features a grumpy Bruce Willis and his squad of Navy SEALs escorting an annoying doctor and her refugees across war torn Nigeria.
Preproduction meeting:
So what are you looking for? Do you want this to be a slick action flick, or do you want this to be a bleak war message movie?
Can’t It be both?
Hmmmmmmmmm
Postproduction meeting:Nope, apparently not….
”I’m better than that, sir… I’m telling you, I’m better than that”

Review by Sudhakar Kumar ★★★★
An action film with more than just action.
It deals with serious, substantial, contemporary political and moral issues. The film is tense from the start and I find myself glued to the screen right up until the end credits. This film separates itself from the other action movie chaff with absolutely stunning cinematography and some genuinely awe-inspiring set pieces.
It deserves more love.

Review by MAGE ★★★ 7
I googled the Nigerian ethnic cleansing and civil war Fuqua’s Training Day follow-up uses as a jumping-off point for its harrowing, yet wholly fictionalized account of Seal Team heroism. That led me down an Internet rabbit hole, that ended up, as most internet rabbit holes do, at a bleary-eyed 11:54 PM reading of the Boko Haram wiki. It was a solid reminder that, while social-media-pilled Westerners get up-in-arms and emotionally attached to certain hot-button atrocities and conflicts, they seem blasé toward, disinterested in, or totally ignorant of dozens more going on at any given moment.
Not to mention the literal thousands from years gone by that led to the calcified religious and ethnic enmities fueling the barbarically hateful powder…

Could’ve been a lot more heartbreaking, especially with extra sacrifices. Bruce Willis did well, but they really should’ve just left on the helicopter.
